Kendrick Lamar, Janelle Monae, Flying Lotus; A trinity in itself that easily makes Houstons First Annual ‘Day for Night’ Festival an unmissable event. Add to that, a slew of other talented performance artists, incredible light instillations to keep you busy for hours, the cities best food trucks, and weather from the gods – and you’ll have an idea of what this weekends indoor, outdoor experience was like.

Stoll with me through NONOTAK studio’s amazing array of LED strobes, sequenced to create 3D hyperspace tunnels of light and sound inside a darkened warehouse. Vibes so rich you could literally stand there for 20 mins, engulfed, and floated out feeling high & recharged. Stumble a few short steps from the exit, right into NICOLAS JAAR’s raging EDM party on the blue stage.

“Day for Night” – a term used in cinema for a set of techniques used to simulate a night scene while filming in daylight.

** I’d never been to the Silver Street Studios campus before this weekend, but it turned out to be the perfect place for a music and arts festival. There was plenty of space for all the stages, room for food trucks, a fine selection of porta-potties, and everything close proximity still managing to miraculously keep the sounds from bleeding into each other. It was like a mad house, you open a door and boom – raging party; boom – quiet instillation; boom – houston skyline.

The Red stage festival ground was carpeted. Outdoors. Thousands of carpeted tiles had been put down over plywood so onlookers wouldn’t get their shoes muddy. How awesomely cozy, & considerate.

No one stole the show quiet like a young finance guy who told the crowd he went by the name of “Corporate Dough”. During a segment in the show, Dot pulled the 22 year old on stage to preform his 2012 smash “M.A.A.D. City.” – Dude bounced from stage right to stage left, pumped on the crowds energy, spitting the classic tongue twister – word for word. It was hilarious as it was awesome & the crowd went crazy for him. — At the end of his run, out of breath and on the verge of tears he belted on the mic, “I love Houston with all my heart. I’m living my dream come true right now. I’ve been waiting for this my whole. If I die right now, everything would have been worth it.” – told Dot he loved him, and the 2 embraced before Dough took his place back in the crowd.

Kehlani Orange Calderon

Tuesday was a night of amazing energy, & incredible vibes. Kehlani and her young team brought the Houston girls out in droves. An hour before she was to take the stage, the sold out venue was buzzing with excitement. The crowd chanted and sung acapella lyrics loud enough to be heard in the green room.

It’s the kind of thing you feel in the pit of your stomach. An undeniable energy that swirls around the room and fills everybody up with joy. Just being present makes you feel a part of something bigger.., something bubbling up about to poor over.

The girl is a star, simply put. A rare talent, mature beyond her years & humble beyond necessity. The show was a hit & everybody went home a little light than they came in. It’s was an inspiring experience, to say the least.
